Steel Building Learning Center

Frequently Asked Questions

IronForge Building Systems serves Wisconsin and Michigan, offering durable, code-compliant steel garages, barns, workshops, and commercial structures. Each building is engineered for northern climates and includes free delivery and installation.

We offer a full line of pre-engineered steel structures, including:

  • Residential garages and hobby shops
  • Barns and agricultural buildings for equipment and livestock
  • Workshops and storage buildings
  • RV and boat covers
  • Carports and lean-tos
  • Light commercial buildings and fleet storage

Each project is customized for width, length, height, door locations, colors, and snow/wind requirements in Wisconsin or Michigan.

Yes. All of our buildings are engineered to meet or exceed local snow and wind-load requirements for your specific county in Wisconsin or Michigan.

Depending on your location and building size, we can design for:

  • Snow loads up to 40–90lbs. psf, suitable for heavy-snow regions
  • Wind ratings up to 115 mph when installed to manufacturer specifications
  • 4:12 roof pitch (standard on our buildings) to help shed snow more effectively

When you request a quote, we look up your zip code and county requirements and make sure your building is certified for the conditions on your property.

We cover all of Wisconsin and Michigan, including both metro areas and rural communities.

In Wisconsin, we frequently serve customers around Madison, Green Bay, Appleton, Wausau, Eau Claire, Stevens Point, and the Northwoods.

In Michigan, we regularly deliver buildings near Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek, Traverse City, Cadillac, Houghton Lake, the Upper Peninsula, and surrounding rural townships.

If delivery is possible to your property by truck and trailer, we can almost always get a crew there — and delivery and installation are included in your price.
Delivery and installation are always free anywhere in Wisconsin and Michigan.

In most cases, yes — especially for enclosed garages, barns, or larger workshops.

  • In both Wisconsin and Michigan, permits are typically handled through your city, township, or county building department.
  • Requirements vary by location, property zoning, and building size.

We make the process easier by providing:

  • Engineer-stamped drawings at no additional cost
  • Anchor and foundation details your building department will want to see
  • Quick updates if the building department requests minor plan changes

You’ll apply for the permit directly with your local office, but we’ll supply all the building documentation they need.

Many of our Wisconsin and Michigan customers come to us comparing a metal building vs. a wood pole barn. Steel buildings offer several advantages:

  • Engineered for snow & wind – Steel trusses and tubing are designed and factory-engineered for your local code.
  • Low maintenance – No painting, no shingle replacement, and no wood rot.
  • Straighter, cleaner finishes – 28-gauge steel panels and color-matched screws create a clean, finished look.
  • Faster installation – Once scheduled, most residential buildings go up in just a few days.
  • Easier interior finishing – Many customers add insulation, interior framing, or liner panels after installation to turn the space into a full-time workshop or small business space.

If you’re comparing quotes, we’re happy to walk through the pros and cons for your specific project.

Both options are available.

  • Vertical panels allow better water and snow runoff and are recommended for Wisconsin climates.

  • Horizontal panels are a more economical choice for light-duty applications.

Foundation requirements depend on building width, use, and code:

  • Concrete slab — Ideal for garages, workshops, and commercial needs
  • Concrete piers/footings — Required for certain wider buildings or frost-protected designs
  • Compacted gravel or asphalt — Suitable for open carports, lean-tos, or agricultural buildings

Prime Steel Buildings provides the required anchors, so you do NOT need embedded anchor bolts. We supply concrete specs and recommendations for your contractor.

If you are not ready for concrete, we can often install on compacted gravel now and you may pour a slab later (based on design suitability).

No. Our role is to ensure your building is properly designed and ordered.

We do, however:

  • Provide slab dimensions and thickness recommendations
  • Supply anchor layout details
  • Share examples of installations from your area for reference

Customers typically hire a local concrete contractor using our guidelines.

✅ Yes. All prices include delivery and professional installation.
There are no hidden costs — what you see on your quote is what you pay.

Once your order is submitted, deposit paid, and site ready — most installations occur within:

  • 2–4 weeks in Wisconsin and Michigan

Season, weather, and demand may impact schedules, but winter installations are common. If your site is not ready, we can lock in pricing now and install in spring.

Pricing varies based on:

  • Building size (width, length, height)
  • Local snow/wind load requirements
  • Roof and panel orientation
  • Door/window selections
  • Site conditions (gravel vs concrete, crew access)

All quotes include delivery and installation, and there are no surprise fees added at installation.

To receive an accurate price, request a quote with your zip code, dimensions, and site surface.

Most residential buildings are completed in 2–3 days, while large commercial structures may take slightly longer depending on size and site conditions.

Your site should be level and clear of debris, stumps, and major slopes.
For concrete foundations, the manufacturer provides the anchors, so there’s no need to install anchor bolts or curbs yourself.
Please refer to our Concrete Recommendations for detailed information on site preparation and foundation guidelines.

A small initial deposit is required to confirm your order (usually 10-15% the order amount).

Your deposit:

  • Locks in your pricing and discounts
  • Places your order into production
  • Reserves your position in the installation schedule

The remaining balance is paid on installation day directly to the manufacturer/installer.

Yes — we offer two customer-friendly options for Wisconsin and Michigan buyers:

  1. Traditional Financing (HFS Financial)
    • Credit-based approval
    • Fixed monthly payments
    • Lower rates for qualified buyers

  1. Rent-to-Own (EZ-Pay)
    • No credit check
    • Only requires the initial deposit
    • No monthly payments due until installation

We can help you compare options to fit your project and budget.

Steel buildings are naturally low-maintenance, which is a big advantage in our climate. We recommend:

  • Washing exterior panels once a year to remove dirt and road salt
  • Checking fasteners and sealant every few years
  • Keeping gutters, downspouts, and drainage paths clear, especially where snow melts near the building
  • Avoiding long-term contact with piled snow or soil against steel panels

With basic care, a quality steel building can provide decades of reliable service.

Our buildings include strong warranty coverage for peace of mind:

  • Framing warranties depending on gauge (12-gauge and 14-gauge options)
  • Panel paint-finish warranty to protect against fading and peeling
  • Workmanship warranty on the installation
  • Wind and snow load coverage when installed to manufacturer specifications

Your quote and order documents will outline the exact warranties that apply to your building model and options. If you have questions about coverage, we’re happy to walk through it with you before you commit.
